To say that its more of a tribute rather than a typical post won't be much farther from truth. I've managed 'first day first shows' for both the sequels... So yesterday itself when i was glued to the screens in pvr ( we actually somehow procured the penultimate row tickets... quite n achievement..huh!!) i wondered what is it about this movie that keeps landing it 'blockbuster of the year','biggest weekend opening' and a top ten entry in the 'USA all time box office' ..blah blah blah..leave these ruminations aside..let alone a simple question be answered ..what's so unique about this flick that keeps me n numerous other like-minded folks rushing mindlessly to the ticket counters..( if it keeps u stranded for a three hour stretch in the mall...so be it...another day another show is simply out of the question)
Is it the eccentric but simply mercurial 'JAck SParrOw' , or the flamboyant and equally stunning Elijabeth Swann ( who can forget those seductive looks and locks ..till this day they form a major chunk of my slice of 'day-dreaming'..) or is it the chivalrous 'Will Turner' (swordsmanship can be his middle name...) and a score of other characters who have fascinated some and repulsed others likewise..take the slimy and 'lovelorn' 'Davy Jones' (even such a fathead has a girl swooning over him..what has the world come to??..some food for thought !!) or the villainous & cocky 'Captain Barbossa'..all inhabit the same world..all are simply unforgettable..
But if one would attribute the timeless charm of this movie to a single character ,he would be doing a huge disservice not only to the rest but also to his ability to pronounce a good judgement on a movie!! Agreed..Depp has immortalized Jack Sparrow..he carries the weight of the movie on those undulating shoulders of his..his screen presence is enough to draw out wide grins from even the most serious of viewers..he has redefined the persona of a pirate..enough has been said and commented on his character...but if you observe closely its the blend of old world piracy and modern subtleties that has reproduced a genre that has been so stagnant for decades..yeah the pirates genre...the movie provokes the darker, adventurous side of our life which is otherwise cluttered in fixed, repetitive schedules..
Deeply reflected in Knightley's character is the urge to break free..to embark on a voyage to worlds unseen,to waters unconquered, to the world's end (literally)..she has a privileged lifestyle but she constantly fantasizes about the pirates..and she's the happiest amongst them.. a part of the crew, part of the ship...it does the identical to us..it revives the pirate in us,gives breathing space to it..the freedom to explore unknown waters ,to tread past the barriers of your mind..to savour the breeze n salt of hitherto seen frontiers, climb atop maelstorms of uncertainty ..after all life is a voyage at best..one of Sarah Bolton's comes to my mind...
"Voyage upon life's sea,To yourself be true,And,whatever your lot may be,Paddle your own canoe" (spoiler warning: ain't this quote a reflection of the fortunes of jack at the end..lol..)
concluding with an ode to the movie with a song from pirate-lore of old..(actually its picked right from the movie..copyright infringement, plagiarization n what not..but for the time being ..let it rest in peace ..and instead look for the 'potion of youth'...watsay??)
hoist the colors high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars,
never say we die.
The king and his men
stole the queen from her bed
and bound her in her Bones.
The seas be ours
and by the powers
where we will we'll roam.
Yo, ho, haul together,
hoist the colors high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars,
never say we die.
Some men have died
and some are alive
and others sail on the sea
– with the keys to the cage...
and the Devil to pay
we lay to Fiddler's Green!
The bell has been raised
from it's watery grave...
Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?
We are a call to all,
pay head the squall
and turn your sail toward home!
Yo, ho, haul together,
hoist the colors high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars,
never say we die.

She's a good example of 'how to remain unchanged by the change around you', and the rest is all-so-well-said by you!
The fourth installment won't be featuring her, nor Bloom: "On Stranger Tides"! Fingers crossed.
